Why are people taught to mount a horse from the left?

Your horse probably doesn’t know it’s right from it’s left, but today horses are trained to expect being mounted from the left, with exception to those belonging or used by disabled rider’s who for whatever reason are unable to mount from the left. The reason mounting on the left became common practice goes back in history a long time. Back when people carried swords as weapons, they carried them on their left side. Then if a man needed to pull out his sword, he would reach across his body with his right hand and grab the handle. If a rider mounted on the right side of his horse, his sword might poke the horse or get caught on the saddle. So instead people always mounted from the left.
